Rainy Season In Hong Kong
Tears are like rain. they loosen up our soil so we can grow in different directions.
– Virginia Casey
Monsoon season is upon us and the rain gods have ripped open the skies. I've always been a sucker for storms... especially in the tropics. The storm winds blow the rain horizontally which literally creates a multi-directional wall of rain pouring out of the sky. Almost as if a billion buckets filled with water was being simultaneously poured out by rain giants.
A few things I love doing when its raining:
... Standing or dancing outside, day or night in the thick downpour of the warm humid monsoon rains. It's the only time you can get drenched to the bone and not freeze your arse off afterwards... unless, you're a drunk fool prancing around in the torrential rain on the top of the IFC towers, at the snazzy rooftop Red Bar + Restaurant (which has a public area btw where you can bring your own food and drink!) and then proceed onto the new extension of The Yorkshire Pudding Bar & Restaurant (formally known as Soho No. 8) to watch the England v's USA football match in full blast industrial air conditioning. I won't mention any names as the people that took part in these shenanigans know who they are!

... Opening the windows/balcony door, picking up a good read and curling up on the sofa to the warm and sweet aromas of the heavy rain.
... Sleeping in, snoozing and/or snuggling up to some one special while listening to the rain beating down on rooftops and metal surfaces. Yes I am a secret romantic.
... Hiring out a stack of films and watching them back to back with your favourite people around you.
... Going for a run in the rain!!! I don't do this as often as I should.
... Getting caught in an outdoor pool or in the sea when the skies open up. A bit weird at first but so much fun... you'll notice how underwater will start feeling warmer than above, almost like you're in a warm bath in the rain!
I did some simple google research about what other people like to do in the rain, and came up with a few funny suggestions... here's some minus all the x-rated stuff (apparently the rain makes people very randy!).
"Try to catch as much as you can in a cup and use mixers to drink it all" - hmmm if I lived in the suburbs then maybe. But as I live in a major Asian city I probably won't be trying this anytime soon... and errr something called acid rain comes to mind.
"If no pool available, put on your bathing suit, find a big hill, lie down by the curb, and let the warm water rush over you" - hmmm not quite sure about this one. Can't get dodgy mental images out of my head. Thanks.
"Let the rain refill your cup of generic American Light beer, then notice upon drinking it that it doesn't taste more watered down than it did before the downpour" - hahaha ok this is funny.
Every time I have to travel in Hong Kong rush hours, during the thick of a morning or evening downpour, I always end up kicking myself for not having my camera with me. Umbrella overload! Sheung Wan, where I live, on Hong Kong island is a tiny place with tiny narrow roads. Although it is a VERY densely populated area known for its Chinese dry food shops, it's trendy 'new meets old' architecture, and where a part of the financial district begins, its quirky streets always give a rich background for an avid urban photographer.
I often find myself imagining what an aerial snap shot would look like, above this layer of multi-coloured umbrellas, at any one of these monsoon moments. It would be mind blowing to see, imagine the composition... a sea of open umbrella's meeting from all directions, smashing into each other on every corner or crossing of a street. Although, as much as it does add amusing entertainment to my journey, I can honestly say it is no fun at all getting poked in the eye by multi-directional umbrella traffic, so that's something to be weary of if you do end up strolling the streets in the rain. The rainy season in Hong Kong is as much of an experience as any of the other attraction here in this tiny corner of the world. So if you get the opportunity, do try to go explore the city in the monsoon season too! ᐂ
